Southern
Thailand comprises of 14 provinces : Chumporn,
Ranong, Surat Thani,
Krabi, Phang Nga,
Phuket, Nakorn Si Thammarat, Trang,
Phatthalung, Songkhla, Satun,
Pattani, Yala, and
Narathiwat. Lying some 750 kilometers from
the southernmost to the northernmost, Southern Thailand covers 70,715.5
squared kilometers, situated on India Peninsula and paralleled with
the Gulf of Thailand on the east and Andaman Sea on the west. The
biggest province is Surat Thani and the smallest province is Phuket.
Geographically, every southern province, except Yala, can be connected
to the sea.
Southern
Thailand's highlight landscapes are not only the impressive seas,
but also mountain ranges : Tanawasi mountain range, Phuket mountain
range, Nakorn Si Thammarat mountain range, and Sankalakiri mountain
range that borders Thailand and Malaysia. The total length of mountain
ranges is about 1,000 kilometers.
Climate of the South
is warm but the influence monsoons make the south year round wet.
The southwest monsoon during May to September makes a lot of rain
and wavy sea affecting Andaman Sea while the northeast monsoon affects
the South during November to February (Chumporn downwards). So there
are only the rainy season and hot season in southern Thailand
Southern-Thai dialect
is generally spoken among the natives and Jawi or Malay is also famous
in the Thailand-Malaysia bordering towns.
Southen
Food Southern dishes are usually more spicy but generally famous
such as Kang Lueang, Kang Tai Pla , Kang Som, Namya Pak Tai, Namprik
Goong Siab, Nam Prik Kapi , Kawyam , Budulon, Korae chichen and sea
food..
Occupations of southern
people mainly concern agriculture such as paddy, coffee, coconuts,
cashew nuts, rubber plantations, and fruits. Besides, fishery and
hatchery are also famous such as prawns farming, pearls farming, etc.
Handicraft works
are KoYo woven cloth, Pumriang silk, Muang Nakorn woven cloth, Batik
cloth, silverware, neillo work, gold ornament, brass work, wickerwork
and shell ornaments. These are a part out of other impressive southern
Thailand.
